….Unless you are the Utah Utes.
I feel like a lot of people have missed this. Utah did this last year a little bit and they are leaning more into it this year. It has become appointment TV for me. Not just because I am a Utes fan, but because it is absolutely electric.
Last year Utes broke out Freshman QB Byrd Ficklin when Devon Dampier was hurt. He lived up to the hype so the Utes put him in here and there last year as a nice little wrinkle when Dampier got back.
Flash forward this year, they lose Kyle Whittingham and Jason Beck to Michigan. The worry was that Dampier was headed there with them. Thankfully they chose Bryce Underwood over him. I say thankfully because it kept the Utes QB room intact. New OC, Kevin McGiven, was not talked a lot about when he came in, but credit to him for knowing what strengths he has and leaning into it.
Why not put your most athletic players on the field? Two players at the QB position are your best players? Fine, play them both at the same time and see what happens.
Two plays last week stood out that I absolutely loved.
Funny enough, on the second play I shared, they started with NO ONE IN THE BACKFIELD!!!!!

I thought those plays were incredibly creative and are such a fun wrinkle to watch for with the Utes this season. I’m excited to see what else the Utes come up with season using their 2 QB package!
